BUAN Hosts Culture Day

While Setswana cuisine was being prepared students and their partners celebrated culture through a display of dancing and vocal prowess by the student group and captivating performance by Captain Dira.

Sponsors, including BUAN and Vice Chancellor who donated a cow and tents as well as public relations office and student welfare office who made the day possible were given tokens of appreciation.

Welcoming guests and students to the Student Representative Committee organised gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof Shalaulani Nsoso stated that education without culture is useless and called on the preservation of culture which he said was dying fast.

He further commended the students and other stakeholders for doing a good job of organising the annual event.

Kago Ramokate, Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development said it was pleasing to be to associated with such events especially where the youth is involved.

“If we bring young people to events that are culture related, we believe that as a nation we will have a sound foundation for the future,” he stated.

Ramokate further commended the students for coming together from across diverse cultures to organise a successful event saying some countries don’t have that.

Former SRC president, who under his leadership the day was inaugurated urged the students to continue commemorating culture as coming from different cultures the day gives a chance to reflect on differences. Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agricultural Development and food Security Dr Mosupi said through such events culture ambassadors were being created.

“Botswana is not left out in terms of culture conservation. What the students are doing is preserving culture and communicating it to the rest of the country,” Mosupi stated and urged the students to keep doing the good work.

After the official programme of events the guests were served traditional dishes ranging from seswaa (pounded meat), bogobe jwa lerotse, morogo wa Setswana and dikgobe amongst others. To wash it all down ginger drink and traditional brew was available.
