She stated that the support of local businesses will ensure that there is creation of employment, support of industries and ensure the continuous growth of the country’s economy.

Kenewendo was speaking at the second Market Street Day hosted by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry on Saturday at the ministry’s Head Office in the Gaborone Central Business District (CBD).

The event held under the theme ‘Your network creates your net worth’, intends to promote local produce and procurement while providing a networking platform for SMMEs and the retail sector as they exhibit their products and services. “It is important to share with our manufacturers, service providers where we think they are lacking so that they can improve, so that their products reach those of international standards and are able to be exported,” Kenewendo stated.

Kenewendo spoke of the campaign that they have kick started that aims at alerting people of things made in Botswana.

“’Pusha BW’, support local,” she said. Street Market Day also aims at the growth of SMMEs to help get their products on shelves and that people around the country know of them and be able to support local businesses through business partnerships with retailers.

Retailers spoke to the SMMEs of the required processes they are expected to follow and the documentations needed in order to get their products or services in retail shops.

When speaking to The Monitor, one of the exhibitors, One Oreeng stated that stakeholders like CIPA, CEDA and others are all part of the Street Market Day.

“They visit the stalls in the means of identifying business opportunities that will help SMMEs to grow.”

She stated that even though the sales are a bit slow, they get to mingle and create business networks with other entrepreneurs.
