The remaining eight regions are expected to make their nominations before the end of this month.

So far, party president Mokgweetsi Masisi is leading the race for presidential election. Six regions have already nominated him as the party president and this might be a sign that he is set to win the party presidency ahead of his challenger Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi. From the eight regions that have not yet held their congresses, except Gaborone region, have endorsed Masisi as party president.

But they are yet to hold congresses to nominate party president. The eight regions that have not yet held congresses to nominate presidential candidate include Kweneng west, Kweneng east, Letswapo, Francistown, Gaborone, Southern, Shoma and Western. Three regions Shoma, Gaborone and Francistown are expected to make their nomination on March 9. Those that have nominated during their congresses include North west, North east, South east, South west, central and Bomase.

The Monitor has learnt that the branch committees, which held their congresses, have also endorsed the name of Masisi as the BDP party president.

“Majority of the regions that have nominated Masisi had only one name for presidential candidate except at Central,” a source said.

“Central had two names and that is why they were forced to conduct elections. Both candidates need support of regions because the resolution from the regions is the voice of democrats.”

If Venson-Moitoi does not get nomination from the regions, she is forced to use clause 29.3 “any other member in good standing of the party may submit candidate for post of president of the party to the secretary general  of the party, not less than 24 hours before  commencement of the applicable national congress upon being sponsored, in writing by not less than 50 delegates to the national congress.”
