Flashback: Botswana has in the past participated in the annual COSAFA Under- 20 tournaments

The BFA was forced to skip this year’s Under-17 tournament, which was held in Mauritius due to insufficient funds, but will honour the invitation this time around. “Yes we will send a team,” BFA acting chief executive officer, Susan Lawrence said. She however, did not specify who would take charge of the team. “We will decide on the technical team and inform you.”

The last COSAFA Under-20 tournament was played in Lesotho in 2013 and the organisers have been battling to secure sponsorship for subsequent editions, which were called off.

This year, PPC Cement will sponsor the tournament, which will be held in South Africa’s North West province from December 7 to 16. Moruleng and Mogwase Stadium are the two venues and 14 countries will take part.

Madagascar has declined invitation while East Africans, Uganda are this year’s guests. South Africa are the defending champion while Botswana is in Pot 1 for Wednesday’s draw with the higher ranked countries Namibia, Lesotho, Comoros and Zambia. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are the seeded teams based on performance at the last tournament in Lesotho.

Botswana, then under Innocent Morapedi failed to emerge from the group stages where they faced Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
