COSAFA chief operations officer, Sue Destombes confirmed to Mmegi Sport this week that BFA president, Maclean Letshwiti had enquired about the possibility of the tournament coming to Botswana.

“They have made enquiries about hosting COSAFA championship, but they did not come back to us again. I am yet to follow up on them,” she said. The championship remains without a host since Zimbabwe’s withdrawal. The regional tournament is normally held between June and July, but this year those dates have been reserved for AFCON competition. COSAFA was initially set for May 19 to June 1.

BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said he was not aware of the communication between Letshwiti and Destombes.

He said the BFA was supposed to host the 2017 edition but due to alcohol restrictions in Botswana, the deal fell through. Beer brand, Castle Lager is the title sponsor of the tournament. “My office has not made any formal enquiry about hosting the tournament.

It means the president had a conversation with Destombes on the sidelines, that I am not aware of,” he said. Mfolo said he is only aware of hosting the 2020 COSAFA Under-17 Women’s Championship.

“We have written to the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) about our intention. That is what we are preparing for,” he said.
