Rasesa Social Picnic: Bigger, Better

The village hosted the fifth edition of Rasesa Social Picnic on Saturday, which was much bigger and better than previous editions.

In its two years of existence from 2017 to date, Rasesa Social Picnic has grown to be one of the best quarterly events in the country.  In tne first year, it was hosted twice and the following year, it was hosted that way again.

This is the fifth time it has been hosted.

Held at Masa Gardens, the chill session yet again attracted multitudes, most of who were youthful patrons. It also provided an out of town experience for the fun lovers.

Often, successful chill sessions are held on Sundays, the most chilled day of the weekend, as people would be nursing hangovers.

However, the Saturday afternoon event provided the impetus for a stormy session. From the onset, one could tell that this was going to be a perfect opportunity for the session to redeem its image.

Patrons had brought their camp chairs to relax over a couple of beverages while listening to a selection of hip-hop, house and old school kwaito tunes. It was just a colourful set up to watch. And this time the crowd was amazing too.

The organisers are even impressed at how the concept continues to attract bigger crowds despite past problems.

According to the founder of the event, Bakang DJ Bakito Phiri, the picnic now attracts close to 3,000 patrons.

“I remember when we started there was a lot of uncertainty as to whether it will be successful and very little belief in the project,” Phiri recalled. “Two years later, it’s one of the country’s leading event and it continues to improve.”

He admitted that the event has since grown into something big from what it was at the time of inception. Phiri expressed satisfaction at the behaviour of the patrons this time around as no criminal activities were reported.

“I am very happy to report that after getting a lot of backlash last year due to that sex scandal, we have redeemed ourselves,” Phiri added.

“This year we seem to have a mature crowd than before and it is just a pleasing sight. The experience is now more interesting and just fun. It was just relaxing.”

Phiri also said they were looking to bring some changes to complement the growth of the event. He said they were planning at making it a two-day chill session to extend it to Sundays as the Saturday afternoon session is now turning more into a festival kind of an event.

The Saturday event had a host of local Djs including Shaft People, Casper The DJ and NT Base to name a few.
