Police Open-Minded On Bontleng Children's Death

However, they are open to investigating allegations that the two children were victims of poisoning.

In an interview, Urban police station commander Superintendent, Smash Mokoba said they were investigating how the two siblings, a boy aged nine and a girl, seven, died after showing signs of the disease.

There are allegations circulating on social media that the deceased children might have been poisoned.

Mokoba said the claims have not been tested as at the moment the family is still mourning the losses.

“We have not confirmed such allegations, but since the family is still mourning maybe they would disclose such allegations to us if indeed they suspect someone might have poisoned the children,” Mokoba said.

“The children’s burial was this Saturday at Molapowabojang village and for now the case is not being treated as suspicious. However, we do not rule out possibilities of investigating the said allegations further if they can be raised to us,” he added.

He said on March 1, they received a report that two children who were attacked by diarrhoea on the morning and later that day lost their lives.

“The children were rushed to Extension II clinic after showing symptoms of diarrhoea and later referred to Princess Marina Hospital where they died whilst receiving treatment. They were also vomiting,” Mokoba said.He said they are waiting for doctors’ report, but currently do not know what really killed the two children.

“We heard that they had taken their last meal the previous night, and the supper was prepared by their mother. We were told that the children woke up with diarrhoea accompanied by vomiting.

We currently know that they were attacked by diarrhoea but do not suspect food poisoning, because we do not have that evidence.

We are still waiting for the doctors’ report to clear those rumours,” he said.
