Zim woman gets five years for attempted infanticide

Justice Bengbame Sechele sentenced Sinikiwe Ncube to five years imprisonment, of which three years was suspended for a period of three years on condition that she does not during the period, commit any offence of which violence to another person is involved. 

The State alleged that Ncube, who is an illegal immigrant, attempted to murder her newly born child on August 19, 2016 at or near Bobonong. 

When making a plea in mitigation on behalf of the accused, the State prosecutor stated that, the balance of the accused’s mind was upset due to several factors. 

“The psychiatrist’s report bears testimony to the accused’s state of mind at the time of the commission of this offence. The psychiatrist indicated that the accused was suffering from a moderately severe form of depression,” stated the prosecutor. 

The prosecutor also added that the Ncube’s boyfriend had denied paternity of the child which condemned her to the sole responsibility of providing for the child in a foreign country into which she entered illegally.
