Gunfight lands man in hospital

The 21-year-old works as a farm hand to the old man at the Tshosane cattlepost. The incident ensued after the victim broke into an argument with his colleague who did not want to share khadi (a traditional brew) with him at a drinking spot.

The argument elevated into a fistfight and the young man allegedly stabbed his colleague multiple times in the head with a sharp instrument. When his colleague fought back, he rushed into the house and grabbed his boss’ gun.

He allegedly shot once in the air and threatened to shoot his colleague. Upon hearing the gunshot, the 65-year-old boss came out and attempted to grab the gun from the young man.

Following a brief gun wrestling, the old man overpowered the reportedly drunk young man. When the boss finally got hold of the gun, he allegedly hit the latter who was said to be rowdy with the gun handle on the head. The victim then fell unconscious.

The young man and his colleague were rushed to Letlhakane Primary Hospital. While the victim was immediately referred to Nyangabgwe with severe head injuries, his colleague was treated for the stabbings and released.

The old man has since been detained.

Letlhakane police assistant superintendent, Tsholofelo Masole said they arrested the old man at his farm. She said the farm owner has been cooperative while they await the news from the hospital.

“We found him at the same farm and he is in our hands. He is helping us with the investigations, and he has been cooperative. He is still being held pending the situation of the victim at the hospital,” she said.

Masole revealed that once the victim is discharged from the hospital, then the old man would also be released.

She said the victim would also come in for questioning and answer for charges of the stabbing and threat to kill that were levelled against him.
