BNSC scrapes off chairperson's award

Instead, the chairperson’s award has been replaced by the Minister’s award, in a change that effects this year.
BNSC chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo said it was decided last year, that the awards should embrace other sports stakeholders, hence the reason to shift the responsibility of choosing the award winner from the chairperson to the Minister. He said the plan is give the award an over-arching structure.
The 39th edition of Botswana Sport Awards will be held on May 25 at Ba Isago University. This is a shift from last year’s dates, when the awards were held in September.
“Traditionally, sport awards were held around April. It is desired that they are held soon after the end of the financial year,” Sedimo explained.
He revealed that the awards are for the performance of the previous year.
Sedimo said last year they were held in September as there were other activities lined up which made it impossible to hold the black tie event in May.
Last year, there was an uproar when badminton umpire, Emmanuel Kgaboetsile won the sport person of the year. It was the first time the award went to an official, but BNSC explained that the awards policy allows all stakeholders a chance to win the award.
