Sekai granted two months to look for lawyer

Gaborone regional magistrate Lentlhabetse Willie yesterday granted Sekai two months to look for a new attorney after his former lawyer Kgosietsile Ngakaagae was barred from representing him in a matter by the same court.

Ngakaagae was barred from representing Sekai back in September citing that he is conflicted in the long dragging case involving victims of flogging in Mochudi in 2010. The court ruled that it was unethical and unacceptable for Ngakaagae to represent Sekai, as he was once the prosecutor in the same case. The court gave Sekai 14 days to appeal the ruling.

Sekai yesterday told the court that he is not appealing the ruling and would be looking for a lawyer. He pleaded to be given two months to find a new attorney.

“Ngakaagae is not here because we are not appealing the ruling. But I am the one to look for a different attorney,” he said.

“I request to be given two months to find another lawyer.”

When agreeing with Sekai’s request to grant him 14 days to find another attorney, magistrate Willie warned Sekai that the matter has been dragging for a long time.

“Bear in mind that this matter has been pending for a long time. You should appear on December 15th to set dates for trial. Inform your new lawyer to be present,” he said.

The magistrate further ordered the court clerks to furnish Sekai with the record of proceedings of the matter so that he gives them to his new lawyer.

Sekai and five others are facing charges of assault and causing grievous bodily harm during flogging incidents that happened in Kgatleng.
