The national women’s wing committee on Monday resolved that the congress should be held after the polls to enable the party to campaign freely for the general elections.

The committee is supposed to be elected every two years for it to get a new mandate from the members.

However, their decision has brought a debate to some BDP members that feel that only the congress has power to do so not the committee.

“The congress is the only body, which has power to make that resolution not a committee. Again it is important to consult other members.  Some members want to know if the women’s wing has authority to extend their mandate and if they will be regarded as a legitimate committee. Will they be eligible to vote in congress if their term has ended,” concerned BDP member asked.

The members are concerned that some members of the party such as the National Youth Executive Committee are trampling upon the party constitution.

“It is true the National Women’s Wing congress has been postponed. I think they have followed party procedure for them to come up with that formal letter,” BDP communication chairperson, Kagelelo Kentse said.
