'Rapist' Cab Driver Wanted

Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Counsel Moyo said the teenager was stopped by a cab driver whilst walking to school, offered a lift and ended up assaulting her.

“Whilst walking to school the teen girl was stopped by a cab driver from one of the popular cabs in Gaborone,” Moyo told The Monitor.

“She said the driver stopped her, asked her where she was going and offered her a lift.”

Moyo stated said the girl narrated that on the way to school, the cab driver changed the direction claiming he was going to pick someone and will drop her at school. Instead, he drove to the bush where he raped her.

Moyo was not in a position to disclose the name of the cab company, as investigations to locate and arrest the driver were ongoing (and also for ethical reasons)  .

Meanwhile, the police chief is concerned about the high fatal accidents involving pedestrians in his policing area.

According to Moyo the number of pedestrians losing their lives on the roads continues to rise despite their efforts to curb the accidents.

He said most of the victims meet their fate when walking on the roads at night.

“Old Naledi are investigating a case in which a pedestrian was hit by a car to death on Saturday at Old Naledi location in Gaborone. However, I do not have full records of the case at the moment because I am currently out of the office,” said Moyo.

He said in another case, Mogoditshane police were investigating a case in which a pedestrian was also hit by a car whilst walking by the roadside on Saturday night.

“Luckily in this incident the pedestrian survived even though (he/she) sustained injures and currently hospitalised at Bokamoso Private Hospital,” revealed Moyo.

“In a similar case, Gaborone West police are investigating a case in which another pedestrian was knocked off by a car along Gaborone West/Molepolole road Saturday night,” he said.

Moyo said luckily the victim survived although he/she sustained serious injuries and currently hospitalised.

He pleaded with pedestrians to be cautious when crossing or walking by the roadside, emphasising that pedestrians should make sure that they cross the road after making sure that they are safe. “Pedestrians should know that their lives are in their hands hence should be cautious at all times,” Moyo said.
