SA Man Charged For Running Over Person

The State alleges that Frederick Christian de Jager, 47, ran over Onneile Mbotho  with his car on August 25, 2018 at Matsiloje village in the North East District and in the process, left Mbotho with a fractured leg.

The reason de Jager allegedly ran over Mbotho – who is said to be his friend – with his car was not disclosed when de Jager was arraigned but will be revealed during trial.

De Jager pleaded not guilty to the charge, adding that he will hire an attorney to defend himself against the charges.

Prior to de Jager’s plea, prosecutor Carol Johnson of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the court that investigations in the matter were complete, adding that the State will call five witnesses to testify against de Jager.

Johnson also stated that the State was not opposed to de Jager being granted bail since investigations were complete.

Magistrate Cele Lebakeng granted de Jager – who has lived in Botswana since 1996 but has not naturalised – bail on conditions that he pays P1,000, brings two sureties to bind themselves at the same amount and report himself at Oodi-Matebeleng police post every Monday during working hours.

In addition, Lebakeng ordered de Jager not to engage in any criminal activities whilst on bail, not interfere with State witnesses and attend court as and when required to do so.

De Jager will appear for mention on May 6, 2019.

Lebakeng set trial dates for November 19 and 21.
