GU suspends Sandaka, Gwandu

Captain Itai Gwandu and striker Sageby Sandaka have been sidelined because the club thinks they were behind players' demand for higher bonuses from the P1 million they won for bagging the national title.

Although club officials could not be reached to comment on the issue, Mmegi Sport can reveal that the two Zimbabwean players were told to stop training after they were fingered as the ring leaders in the bonus dispute.

GU players boycotted training a week ago because they were incensed with what they considered low bonuses.

The players were demanding as much as P20,000 each for winning the national title. The club only offered the players between P2,000 and P10,000.

The Gaborone giants got P1 million for winning the be MOBILE Premier League title after a 19-year wait.

When the players demanded higher bonuses, the management said those who do not accept the amount they got should leave training and all the players boycotted.

Sandaka is not new to controversy after he was suspended by the club last season and missed a league match against BMC.

He has since been linked to former champions, Mochudi Centre Chiefs who are said to be preparing a formal bid for him.

Sandaka's contract with GU expires next year. Gwandu is a disciplined player who has led from the front, though he finds himself on the wrong end in the dispute over bonuses.

Meanwhile, GU striker, Wellington Maposa has joined Chiefs on a two-year contract despite efforts by the Reds to keep him.

The striker was the hero on the last day of the campaign when he scored the solitary goal that downed Chiefs and handed GU the title.

Maposa told Mmegi Sport that he will start training with his new club on Wednesday (yesterday).

Contacted for comment, GU secretary, Kagiso Sebele said he was attending a meeting.
