The boxer suffered the injury after colliding with his opponent, Mmusi Tswiigi during the Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) Independence Championship that was held at the Civic Centre. Chikanda told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he has a cut above his eye due to Tswiigi’s head butt.

“I started training yesterday morning but I have not recovered fully and that means I cannot compete on Saturday. I will just attend as a way of supporting other boxers,” he said.

Chikanda said missing the competition breaks his heart as it is a drawback. He said as a boxer, it is important to be fighting all the time to keep in shape. He said it is worrying because the weekend tournament is used as part of preparations for BoBA National Championships due in November.

He said it was important for him to compete and gauge himself for the championship.

Meanwhile, BoBA spokesperson, Kenny Maragana said interclub competitions are intended to raise the level of competition and also to improve the standard of boxing.

“We expect boxers to display their best as they prepare for the national boxing championship next month. The young boxers will be using the platform as preparation for the Africa Union Sports Council Region Five competition to be held in Angola in December,” said Maragana.

He said the best boxers in the country such as Kabelo Bagwasi, Mohammed Otukile, Tswiigi, Keoagile Rantutu are expected to trade leather.

Maragana said BoBA is committed to doing the nation proud through exposing athletes to competitions as a way of instilling a strong attitude and bold state of sportsmanship. He said all 15 clubs are expected to take part during the weekend tournament.
