The family members were visibly still shaken by the incident, but spoke to Mmegi nevertheless.

Jinesh Naik (25) was killed in front of his family on Friday evening at the entrance of his home around 7.30pm.

“A family friend had visited us. We had prepared a welcome dinner for him. When he (deceased) rang the intercom, we could identify him by his voice,” a family member who preferred anonymity  said yesterday.

He continued: “The gate was opened for him and as he walked toward the main door of the house, the unidentified man pounced on him from behind”.

Preliminary police investigations reveal that the deceased was shot upon arrival at his residence in Block 6.

“The suspects who later robbed the family of cash, jewellery, a laptop and cellphones, fled the scene in a blue car,” a police statement reads.

The deceased, whose body was cremated on Saturday, did not see the attackers who shot him from behind, leaving him in a pool of blood, according to the family member.

“When it happened his aunt shut the door out of fear and screamed, as his body hit the ground. We opened the door again and that is when they dragged his body inside the living room,” said one of the family members.

He continued: “As they dragged his body inside, whilst he was trying to catch his breath, we pleaded with them to let us take him to the hospital whilst they remain alone inside the house to take whatever it is they wanted, but they refused.

“They said to us that they would repeat what they did to him to all of us if we did not cooperate. They asked for all our valuables and we gave them all of them but they kept asking for more shouting, ‘give us more, give us more’.”

The family says the men, who had covered their faces with hoodies communicated in English throughout, one of them with a Zimbabwean accent.

They said that one of the suspects carried a gun, which was used in the shooting whilst another carried steel rod and the other a knife. They also confirmed that the thieves made away with cash and valuables amounting to P200,000.
