Lack of gigs forces DJ to breach contract

According to Jason Steyn of J&S Productions, DJ Lunchbar decided to go against his contract and they had to terminate his contract. “J&S Productions signs local artists to promote, manage them and take care of bookings. This is to help them with their music careers,” he said.

He added that their artists are all under a two-year contract and have to abide by certain conditions, one of them being that all bookings go through the company and not themselves. For J&S Productions’ services, the artists are meant to pay the company 20% of whatever they make at each gig.

“I want people to know the reason for him leaving the company so that he doesn’t go and tell other stories to make my company look bad,” he highlighted.

Steyn said he wanted to show Botswana that the local music industry is not what it should be because people do not follow the correct procedures. “It is a major problem in the music industry and I believe we can make some sort of impact and make people aware of the issues,” he said.

Contacted for comment, DJ Lunchbar said he was not happy with the contract therefore he opted for termination of the contract. He said he has not received any response concerning the termination of his contract with J&S Productions. He said he was frustrated by the fact that he went for a long time without a gig. “I survive through these gigs so I ended up getting my own gigs without their assistance,” he said. DJ Lunchbar said the contract stipulates that J&S Productions only assists him to book gigs. He accused J&S Productions of being negligent and poor when it comes to communication.
