Gunners Beat GU To Advance In FA Cup

Just five minutes into the game, Patrick Kabamba had his shot parried back into play by the goalkeeper as GU looked for an early goal.

Two minutes later, Moyagoleele eventually took the lead as Thatayaone Kgamanyane tucked in from close range following a low cross from Obonwe Maome. The Reds came close in the 16th minute. Kgamanyane beat two of his markers inside the box and played to unmarked Kabamba, but the latter’s shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Gunners levelled the matters on the hour mark. Desire Bafana met Masibusane Zongo’s lobbed free kick with a header leaving the goalkeeper motionless.

Two minutes to the break, Rentse Keakabetse delivered a cheeky pass to Obonwe Maome but the latter shot over the bar. The Reds were awarded a penalty with just a minute to the break after Oabile Makopo handled the ball inside the box.

Kgamanyane stepped up and sent goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot to give his side the lead at the half time.

Nine minutes into the second half, substitute Lungisanyi Fanyana went for an acrobatic kick after receiving the cross from Katlego Mothibi to level the scores. The teams went into lottery of penalty shootouts.

After nine rounds of kicks, Gunners’ goalkeeper Katlego Mbise became the hero of the day as he guessed the right way to save Alphord Velaphi’s kick to send his side to the next round.

“We accepted the defeat by penalties but we did not lose the game, we gave away the game. It is sad, we gave this game away, we should have buried our chances but we did not. We gave away the game,” GU coach. Phillimon Makwengwe said after the game.

His counterpart, Gunners’ Pontsho Moloi was jubilant man and said the team has ‘done it’ for the loyal supporters.

“It is a project that we are working on. As long as we getting the results is good and today winning the game says we are on the right track. I am happy to see the Gunners faithful happy,” he said.
