She also attached letters of sponsorship from 50 delegates as per the party’s constitutional requirement.

Venson-Moitoi is however crying foul as she complains that the BDP’s unprecedented presidential election “was rigged from day one”. Speaking at a press conference at Planet Lodge in Gaborone today, Venson-Moitoi cited a long list of what she termed as “irregularities” in the party’s presidential campaign trail.

She claims that her supporters are constantly “harassed” and “intimidated”. Venson-Moitoi said some have been summoned to the State House in a bid to coerce them into supporting President Mokgweetsi Masisi.  She complained that some “delegates were handpicked” as some regional structures have been hijacked by the party’s Central Committee.

Venson-Moitoi also protested the party’s handling of accommodation at Kang, the venue for the congress slated for the weekend. She reported that almost all lodges were block-booked.

“I went to Kang to search for accommodation and I found two places with availability and I paid. Later on the lodges called telling me that ‘Rre Balopi’ said we must cancel your booking and return the money,” she said.

Venson-Moitoi added that she had rented a farm nearby, but a certain Central Committee member changed the locks while her people were in the process of setting up.

BDP secretary general, Mpho Balopi was not available for comment while acting executive secretary of the party, Lesedi Dintwe was not able to confirm receipt of the letter saying he had been busy with meetings.

Venson-Moitoi has also indicated that she intends to sue newspapers after weekend reports that she was in a “secret meeting” in Victoria Falls.
