Six die in road accidents these holidays

This, according to the police marks a decline in the number of road fatalities as compared to the same period last year.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Commissioner Witness Bosija said in an interview this week that they recorded a total of 266 road accidents with six fatalities.

“For the period September 25 to October 2, we have recorded a slight decline in road accidents as compared to the same period last year,” he said.

“This year we had about 266 road accidents as compared to 322 last year same period. In those road accidents last year we had recorded nine fatalities as compared to six this year,” he said.

Although the Police are impressed with the decline in numbers they continued to warn motorist to desist from engaging in other road offences such as drunken driving and driving without a license.

“This year the drunken driving cases have increased from 178 of last year to 198. For those that ran through the red traffic light the tallies now stand at 72 as compared to 76 last year.”

This year those charged with over speeding amount to 1866 motorist as compared to 1754 last year. The Police have revealed that they generally recorded a slight decrease in the road traffic offences.

Meanwhile, the Police have shot and killed a robbery suspect this week following a shoot out with the police. The incident happened near Nokaneng village this past Monday.

In their statement the police say; “a robbery suspect was killed in a shoot out with the police following an armed robbery incident…In the process the police also arrested a 27 year old suspect and recovered a gun, live ammunition and a knife.”
