Couple perishes in head-on collision

The accident happened in the afternoon, seven kilometres away from Mogapi/Sefhophe gate on the B151 road.  The Audi was coming from Maunatlala, while the bus was from Bobonong en route to Gaborone.

There were three passengers in the Audi and 25 passengers on the bus.  The other passenger from the Audi was admitted at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in critical condition.

All the passengers in the bus escaped with minor injuries.  They were treated at Selebi Phikwe Primary Hospital, and the majority was released.

Six are admitted at the hospital where they are still under observation. Botshabelo Police station commander Gothusamang Badubi confirmed the accident.

From their initial investigations, Badubi said it appeared the accident was caused by the negligence of the Bus driver.

She said the Sprinter was overtaking when it collided head-on with the Audi.  She said it was either the driver might have not seen the Audi or he might have miscalculated the distance and speed of the oncoming Audi.

She said the driver of the bus had been detained to assist with the investigation.

Badubi encouraged road users to be vigilant and to observe traffic regulations.

“Our investigations are still at preliminary stages. The driver of the bus is helping us with the investigation.  We have also engaged other professionals who deal with accidents to assist us,” the police senior superintendent said.
