Interestingly, the prayer part by the President is missing in all the messages that were read out at the kgotlas on his behalf. Even the official message distributed by the Office of the President soon after the delivery of the speech, does not have the prayer part.

Government spokesperson, Dr Jeff Ramsay says the prayer does not appear in the distributed speeches because the President decided to include it on his own. Dr Ramsay was confirming that the prayer part was entirely the President’s own and input. President Khama may not be famous for writing his own speeches, but the manner in which he delivered his prayer for the nation appeared to endear him  to many Batswana who felt that the prayer felt genuine and coming from the heart. Many took to the social media raving about their President, with some even claiming that he may have been the first Botswana President to do so.

Khama’s Prayer

“We are gathered here today to celebrate this nation’s achievements. We celebrate our democracy. We celebrate our many developments. We celebrate our peace and our unity. Most of all Dear Lord, we celebrate our people, Your people.

As we continue on our journey we seek Your blessings and Your guidance to achieve dignity and prosperity for all our people and to walk and follow a path laid down by Your teachings.

As we cast our eyes to the blue skies, we pray for rain from up there to fall and cause blue water to flow down here. So that the people, black and white; united and proud can rejoice. Amen.”
