A press release from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry states that restaurants selling liquor are only permitted to sell to bona fide diners at between 12 noon and 2:30pm in the afternoon as well as between 6:30pm and 10:30pm on a daily basis.

The Ministry reminds the general public and liquor traders that the official trading hours as stipulated in the second schedule of the Liquor Trading Regulations of 2008 will prevail during the independence holidays.

Bottle store licence authorises the sale of liquor to members of the public for consumption off the premises between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm on Monday to Saturday.  These facilities are not allowed to open Sundays and public holidays.

Permanent secretary in trade, Peggy Serame further reminded liquor wholesale and distributor licence holders that the sale of liquor for consumption off the premises shall be carried out between 08:00 am and 5:00 pm on Monday to Saturday, and not permitted to operate over the holidays and Sundays.

“A discotheque or night club licence authorises the sale and consumption of liquor on licensed premises between 7:00 am and midnight from Monday to Thursday, 7:00 pm and 2:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Saturdays and public holidays,” Serame said.

“A club liquor licence authorises the sale and consumption of liquor on the licensed premises between 2:00 pm and 10:00 pm from Monday to Thursday 12:00 pm and 11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3:00 pm and 10:00 pm on Saturdays and public holidays,” she said.

Those who have applied for temporary liquor licences for festivals and other public activities will be allowed to operate between 2:00 pm and midnight Saturday.

The permit authorises holders to operate from the above time from Mondays to Saturdays.  Those granted temporary liquor licence for picnic authorises the sale of liquor between 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Mondays to Saturdays.

Moreover, Serame reminded the public and traders that licencees are not permitted to sell intoxicating liquor to any person known or could reasonably be believed to be under the age of 18 years.

“All liquor business operators and or managers are therefore advised to observe and comply with the provisions of the Liquor Act and its regulations as stated above,” Serame said.
