National director for Miss Teen Universe Botswana, Messiah Jackson said the auditions for this year’s Queen will start in Kanye on May 18 before proceeding to Palapye the following day. Gaborone will then host the auditions the next weekend.

Jackson told Showtime that even though the pageant has been running for seven years, they are not yet satisfied with the number of girls that come for auditions.

She said this has forced them to carry out auditions in particular places to try and cover up for potential Queens’ financial strains. “Since our pageantry is about young girls who are still of course under the care of their parents, we were a bit skeptical if parents will allow their children to enter the pageant following criticism surrounding the pageantry industry.

To our surprise, parents have been making calls to enquire about the event and they have shown interest in allowing their children to enter,” said Jackson.

She said Miss Teen Universe Botswana is not only about teaching the girls to walk the ramp, they will also be trained on how to behave as girl children given the era they are growing in. The contestants will also be given a chance to start a project to develop in their home towns.

The actual Miss Teen Universe Botswana will be held in August although the organisers will confirm the exact date at a later date. The aspiring queens will be charged a registration fee of P100 for the auditions.

Meanwhile, Jackson said the current reigning queen, Tebogo Thato Sekwati (17) recently went to represent Botswana in Panama, Central America and made it to top 16 out of 30 countries.

She called out local companies to sponsor the event and also show support to the pageantry industry.
