When speaking on the sponsorship rollout, the BFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kitso Kemoeng indicated that from the P6 million Debswana sponsorship, each of the 24 clubs in the FDL will receive their P50,000 share.  However, he said that the clubs will be given the money in two parts. They will first receive 45% of the amount.

He said for the first phase, P540,000 will be divided amongst the 24 clubs before they share the remaining P660,000.  In other costs, Kemoeng said administration wages would cost P60,000 for two people who would be working for the two offices they intend to open. The kits branding on the other hand accounts to P60,000 of the budget, which means each team will receive P2,500.

Kemoeng also said that P700,000 would be available as prize money for each region, North and South, total P140,000. Referees on the other hand would receive P700 for each of the 264 games they officiate, amounting to P184,800.

Furthermore, it was said that P4,500 would be set aside for each of the 16 meetings held by regional committees and other meetings with the sponsors.

In total, all the meetings will cost P72,000. The budget for office equipment amounts to P30,000 whilst match balls would cost P67,200, which is P2,800 for each team.

Flags would cost P24,000 while nets cost an amount up to P10,000 for each club.

Kemoeng said the total budget amounts to P2,080,400, which is P925,680 for phase one and P1,154,720 for phase two.

He said nothing would be available to help the promoted teams, radio broadcast, venue branding, awards ceremony and match commissioners because of limited budget.

The CEO urged the FDL committees to educate members how the money would be spent and that it is not enough.

“We have already exchanged bank accounts with Debswana hence we assure teams that the moment we receive the money, we will transfer it straight away. But clubs must know that there are certain branding expectations that would be revealed to them soon,” Kemoeng said.

He also clarified that the grants for teams exclude the money for the soccer balls, corner flags and nets as that will be taken care of by the association.

Before he revealed the sponsorship rollout, he took the teams through BFA properties, funds and sponsors stating that in the 2015-2016 season BFA had income of P21,942,486, expenditure of P32,530,540 and a deficit of P10,588,054.

The Debswana representative, Barulaganyi Bantsi said the sponsorship deal is a sign that they take First Division seriously.

“We believe First Division is important in Botswana football that is why we found it (fitting) to sponsor you again.  By extending the deal, we have shown that we take FDL seriously so it is now upon team leaders to show that you also take us and yourselves seriously,” Bantsi said.

He emphasised that the deal is a partnership, which both parties ought to respect with one intension of taking Botswana football to a certain level.

He said Debswana can sponsor the FDL and stop while the committees cannot stop leading football.

“The future of football (first division) is in your hands, we want our good name to remain good in the corporate entity.  So it is up to you to decide the future of our partnership. Whatever you do might impact our relationship. The better chance to continue would come from your hands and the good relationship that we have,” he said.

He told teams that the Debswana sponsorship is just a support hence they ought to look for other corporate entities that can support them.

He promised that as partners they would also attend matches to show that indeed they are committed to the partnership.
