Regent fraud case continues in October

The trial could not continue, as both the substantive prosecutor and the accused’s attorney were not present in court.

The court heard that the accused’s lawyer and the prosecution were not in agreement on the dates of the continuation of the trial, but regional magistrate Mokwadi Gabanagae decided to set the October date so that both parties could decide on the trial dates suitable to everyone.

“The accused are to appear on the 10th of October to set dates for continuation of trial,” he said.

According to court papers, 52-year-old Shuttoo Vinod Kumar under his company Moscross Panel Beating (Pty) Ltd and three others are facing two charges of obtaining by false pretences.

In count one the state alleges that between June and September 2012 in Gaborone Kumar, Constable Maikano Seloiso, Mogomotsi Moreetsi and Godfrey Othusitse Moseki acting together with intent to defraud, obtained P39,238.43 from Regent.

This was after making a misrepresentation to the said insurance company that a Mazda 3, insured with Regent, was involved in an accident with a Mercedes Benz to Moreetsi.  The men are said to have claimed that the Mazda 3 was repaired by Moscross garage at a cost of P39,238.43, which they obtained, yet in truth they knew the representation was false.

In the second count, it is reported that the four accused acting jointly obtained P60,000 from Regent after making za misrepresentation to the said insurance company claiming that the Mercedes Benz vehicle involved in a separate accident with another insured Mazda 3 was a write off. The scam cost Regent a total of P99,238.43.
