The locomotive monument, situated next to the stadium will be officially unveiled on Tuesday next week. Deputy district commissioner, Orapeleng Modimoopelo told Mmegi that the independence activities would start next Sunday with a service attended by all churches.
“There will also be a faith-based concert on Sunday evening and schools are expected to do their part in the general clean-up campaign this Thursday,” he said.
The copper/nickel mining town will also hold an art, poetry and comedy show next Monday evening. A fashion show will be held Wednesday at the Town Hall.
Authorities have also organised a football tournament that will pit two teams from the constituency league against two teams from the Botswana Football Association (BFA) structures.
The match will be preceded by a cultural night, which will feature traditional music and drama competitions.
The normal independence celebrations will be next week Friday and are expected to start off with the town mayor, Amogelang Mojuta inspecting scout troops. Modimoopelo added that efforts are still underway to identify a guest speaker for the big day.
The day will also be graced by the football tournament finals after lunch followed by a contemporary music festival and a fireworks display at midnight. Modimoopelo appreciated the contribution of corporate entities towards the celebrations.
“The response by the business community has been very encouraging as compared to the previous independence celebrations.
This is despite the economic slump. “Some of the business community have made monetary contributions or in kind.
“For instance, they have pledged to sponsor the ceremony for the official unveiling of the BCL locomotive monument,” he said.
Stanbic Bank has donated P15,000 for paint that will be used to paint certain houses in Botswana colours.
Barclays Bank meanwhile, has pledged to refurbish Botshabelo kgotla poles, while SPEDU will spearhead the general clean up campaign around the town.
“The business community’s involvement is very comforting this year. Some have even promised us additional flags to decorate the whole town.
“They have even committed themselves to paint their businesses with the national colours,” he said.
