The event, which was organised by Balekane ba Botswana in conjunction with Gaborone City Council (GCC) turned out to be a success as everything important was on point.  Despite starting later than expected, the pageant was filled with fun and ululations as the audience at the conference centre gathered to support their loved ones.

Looking young for their age, the contestants made it much harder for the judges to choose as each couple had its unique performance during the parade.  Masego Motlhabane and Jabu Radipitse outshined 12 other contestants from the different pageantry districts.

In the first parade, the pair displayed a beautiful performance as Motlhabane gave Radipitse a rose before he gave her a ring.

The Molekane wa Botswana man knelt down and presented a ring to his partner who in excitement threw the roses in the air and jumped for joy.

He carried her over a few steps towards the judges as they continued their wonderful performance.  The performance won the pair a number of fans as the judges evidently looked pleased by the act.

However, a Chobe couple had earlier displayed a similar performance even though the man did not propose to the woman.  In his act, he surprised his partner with red roses as she jumped in excitement before they continued with their parade.

Not one to be left behind, the Masunga couple displayed a traditional home act as the man sat on a traditional chair (setilo sa dikgole) while his partner knelt down to serve him a meal.  The pair that was eager to score points later treated the audience to a few magical dance moves.

The pageantry districts that made it to the top five were Kgatleng, North East, Gaborone, Jwaneng and Masunga.  However, the Jwaneng couple proved that they were not just good performers with beautiful faces but that they are also an intelligent couple when asked to choose one pillar from Vision 2016’s seven.  They elaborated what it meant to them as Botswana citizens, a piece of cake for Radipitse who decided to answer the question on the couple’s behalf.

“We choose a proud and united nation. As Batswana we are a proud nation and indeed we stand here proud of who we are. This is proven by the fact that we are proud of our culture. We always celebrate our culture together.  Through all our events, Batswana always come together as one and celebrate together.  There is no tribalism and we always pray for our country as one happy nation.  Our country is also admired by many nations for its peace and good governance.  Our government is a democratic one,” Radipitse said proudly, as the audience screamed in excited approval.

The Masunga couple scooped the second position after successfully answering their question.  They were asked that as Botswana celebrates its golden jubilee, why and what would they celebrate for the country’s 50 years of independence?  They said as the ‘peers of Botswana’ they found it fit to celebrate the country as it had greatly developed since independence. They celebrate peace, democracy, free education and the economy that has been steady for years.

The Kgatleng couple was given food on a silver platter  when asked to mention the country’s first capital city, where it moved to and why it was finally moved to where it is currently.  They said Mafikeng was Botswana’s first capital city and was later moved to Lobatse where after realising the city was hilly and had no room for development was later moved to Gaborone as it was spacious.

Other couples were from Chobe, Selebi-Phikwe, Francistown, Kweneng, Central, North West and Gantsi.

The event was later followed by a fashion show where the contestants looked stunning in various designed wears from local designers in the likes of Black Trash, Boitumelo Seboko, Sweety, Thabiso Dibeela and others. All the designs were exquisite.
