YAB Artprenuers Showcase Skills

The six-week programme trains women in the arts and accords them the chance to learn, grow in the creative industry and be able to identify marketable places to tap into.

YAB project manager, Timothy Mweemba said the programme is aimed at changing the perception that artists can make a living out of their passion. “Unfortunately, in the creative industry, artists tend to get absorbed in the beauty of their work and forget that they need to sell and actually make a living out of their passion,” Mweemba explained.

He said the main purpose of such a programme is to get females who are passionate about what they do and help them turn their creativity into profit-making pieces. Participants will be taught skills such as organising, but in a more practical way, as they will be expected to run an exhibition at the end of the six-week programme.

“At the end of the programme, everyone who took part is going to be expected to exhibit. They can’t exhibit anything if they do not have anything to show hence the need for such a programme,” Mweemba said.

On her part, Mimi Modimakwane, a co-founder of 750ml The Change Room said artists come in so many different forms and that women in art are bold enough to express the courage that some people are failing to express through art, either through words, melody or paintings.

She said women are the embodiment of expression for other people.

“I encourage all the women who are part of this programme to be brave enough to be themselves and express every emotion either beautiful, ugly, pain or happiness through art,” Modimakwane said.

For posterity, Mweemba urged everyone to continuously take charge of their talents and turn them into something that will leave a mark for generations to come.
