The talk about Khama leaving the party heightened after he did not attend the BDP’s manifesto launch despite being invited. BDP Communications Committee chairperson, Kagelelo Kentse said they had invited Khama to the launch.

“We were surprised that he did not show up. We invited him last Monday and he responded positively. We had even arranged for his arrival, but he never showed up. Up to now he has not communicated with us,” Kentse said. Khama did not attend the Kang Extraordinary Congress where he was expected to take part in voting for Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi as the party president last month.

The ex-president and his successor Mokgweetsi Masisi have both acknowledged that their relationship is not cordial.  Khama called for Masis’s ousting as president. He went around the country canvassing support for Venson- Moitoi and even wrote a letter of support for her candidacy.

Khama has in the past expressed frustration by the Masisi administration and Office of the President. Amongst issues he complained of were being denied to have Isaac Kgosi as his Private Secretary as well as denying him aircraft to use in his trips.

Masisi on the other hand blasted Khama for undermining his authority. The President had promised that he would arrange a meeting with Khama to iron out issues, but that has not happened yet. Party elders; former president Festus Mogae, former vice president Ponatshego Kedikilwe, ex-Cabinet ministers; David Magang and Patrick Balopi tried to reconcile the two without success.

Khama posted on his Facebook page announcing that he would over the weekend meet with Bagammangato to discuss his future role in politics. In particular he would discuss the BDP and also his service to the people of Gammangwato and Batswana as a whole.
