“Members are informed that at the request of some members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in particular, the president and general secretary convened a NEC on April 26, 2019,” reads a statement from Mogwera. “At the meeting, the deputy president declared that the meeting did not form a quorum and such had to adjourn. But some NEC members proceeded with the meeting and took a resolution to reconvene another one on the following day.”

The statement further said at the commencement of the meeting held on April 27, 2019 at Regent Hotel, some members of the NEC raised an objection on the legal and constitutionality of the meeting.

Mogwera said the agenda of meeting which commenced at 2:50pm and at 9:40pm degenerated into chaos as a result of the endless exchanges amongst NEC members.

After assessing the situation, which was dominated by lack of progress and productivity, coupled with the objection raised she, as the presiding chairperson of the meeting, exercised her discretion and adjourned the meeting.

The Monitor has learnt that some of the agenda items of the claimed illegal meeting were that all BOPEU court cases regarding people who owe the organisation money amounting to P62 million be withdrawn.

It is said that some NEC members had wanted the forensic audit reports regarding the Union’s financial books, but the auditors returned to South Africa after their Friday meeting adjourned.

Mogwera claimed that actions and conduct of some members of the NEC are not in the best interest of the Union.
