Brutal assault ends in murder

The deceased was a fourth-year student at GIPS in Gaborone. The accused is an employee of Spar Supermarket in Letlhakane. The incident happened when the woman visited her boyfriend last week following the Easter long weekend.

On the fateful night an argument allegedly broke out between the couple, leading to a fight. According to Letlhakane police, the suspect confessed to brutally beating the woman up and knocking her against the walls.

When the deceased fell unconscious the suspect reportedly called the neighbours for help and they reported the matter to the police.

“We found the deceased unconscious as reported and we rushed her to Lethakane Primary Hospital where she was confirmed dead on arrival,” police superintendent Michael Maphephu said.

The station commander added that the woman had scratches and signs of strangling on the neck. He said the suspect was arrested at the scene of the crime, and he has been detained to assist with the investigation.

“The deceased is at Letlhakane hospital mortuary where she will undergo a postmortem. The suspect will appear before Letlhakane Magistrate Court soon.”

In another incident within his jurisdiction, Maphephu said a 51-year-old woman of Mmatshumu village was last Friday raped by an unknown assailant while out herding her goats.

The woman left her house around five in the late afternoon, as it was usual of her to look for her goats and herd them to the kraal that is located in the outskirts of the village.

At the Kraal, a man that she could only identify as younger attacked and raped her before escaping. The suspect is still at large.

“Times are different, I encourage women whether old or young to always be in the company of others when going into secluded areas whether it's at night or during the day. Rape and murder have become frequent everywhere despite continued efforts to curb them,” he advised.
