International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa presented the BCA with the Women’s Cricket Initiative award at the ICC Regional Conference held in Windhoek, Namibia this week.

The award is in recognition for BCA’s efforts in growing the women’s game.

BCA fixtures and publicity secretary, Sumod Damodar said the award reflects the efforts Botswana has put in to advance the women’s game.

“It is an acknowledgement of the efforts by BCA and our focus on women’s cricket. It also gives credence to the importance of the BCA women’s annual tournament and the impact it has for Botswana and the other participating teams,” Damodar said. The BCA has rolled out a countrywide development programme, which has seen 14,000 boys and girls take part. The women’s national team recently undertook a bilateral tour to Namibia, playing five T20 games in Windhoek.

“This was the first tour outside Botswana by the team, after many years and the experience and exposure was overdue.  “Unfortunately, the team did not fare well in the outcome of the matches played losing all five of their encounters,” Damodar said.

The ICC Africa Regional Conference in Namibia saw all 21-member countries from the continent take part. Chairperson, Ebrahim Bhamjee and acting chief executive officer, Fazal Sheriff, represented BCA. The ICC as the associate member director on the ICC Chief Executive’s Committee (CEC) and ICC Development Committee member invited Damodar.
