BUAN staff threaten to petition Chancellor

In a letter dated April 16, 2019 addressed to the University’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Shalaulani Nsoso, the staff listed a number of issues they demand the management to address, failing which they will petition the BUAN Chancellor.

These include amongst others, the review of staff profiles, availability of the approved remuneration structure, withdrawal of all advertised positions until appeals completion and termination of the transformation coordinator’s position.

According to the staff, some members are expected to perform duties stipulated in the old job profiles even though their profiles have changed during the university’s transformation process.

They also demand a complete and approved remuneration structure that was sanctioned by BUAN Governing Council back in 2018. “We find it completely unfair and unjust for management to also advertise the vacant positions which were left not filled during the transformation process while there are still some appeals going on. We therefore request that all advertisements be upheld until all appeals have been attended and finalised,” reads the letter in part.

Yet another demand is that the staff also wants the position of Transformation Coordinator to be abolished as it is not in the university structure. They claim it is just a temporary position created to facilitate the transformation process. According to sources, this is just an indication of many problems facing the university.

Although it is said that Nsoso met the staff members Thursday to try and find a solution to their demands, nothing concrete was agreed at that particular meeting. The consultative meeting was convened by the acting vice chancellor.

It is not the first time staff members at the university have had issues with management. Two years ago, the staff members petitioned the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (MoA), Patrick Ralotsia, over the appointment of university’s then acting vice chancellor Dr Mataba Tapela.

The university had not responded to Mmegi enquiry at press time.
