A Knife Is Mogoditshane's Killer Nightmare

Following the incident, Mogoditshane Police station commander, superintendent Russ Letsebe expressed concern about the murder saying it proves that indeed the knife is used in such incidents.

He explained that the young man had spent the whole night entertaining himselves with others in a yard at Tsolamosese during a baby shower.

“The incident occurred early in the morning whilst the deceased and others were entertaining themselves drinking alcohol. The deceased allegedly got into a misunderstanding with the suspect that led to a fight. The victim was stabbed with a knife on the thigh,” Letsebe said.

On the other hand, Letsebe revealed that the suspect is sill on the run. Many people in the area know him though.

“Our investigations are ongoing whilst we are still searching for the suspect. It is alleged that the conflict started when one of the boys asked for some money from the other one to buy a cigarette. The two got physical and in the process one took out a knife and stabbed the deceased on the thigh,” he said.

He stated that the deceased was rushed to Lesirane clinic where he lost his life whilst still attended to by nurses.

In discussing the scope of the problem, Letsebe disclosed that: “Incidents in which people were killed with a knife have risen in my policing area.

Every weekend we record murder cases in which people die from knife stabbing. I do not know why people prefer to carry knives at entertainment places. Knife crime incidents are high in this area and concern us as the police,” Letsebe said.

In yet another incident, another young man was stabbed with a knife at Smorden ward in Mogoditshane. The victim is fighting for his life at Princess Marina Hospital with serious injuries.

To deal with the problem, Letsebe stated that his office carries out night patrols where they stop, search and seize. The office then charges people who carry weapons at night.

For example, “we hold patrols, seize knives because we have observed that people who carry them appear to have the confidence to fight back when they are involved in misunderstandings. Most of the victims and perpetrators of stabbings are the youth especially men”.

Letsebe regretted that despite the patrols and charges, “people continue to carry weapons and knives in entertainment areas.”
