All roads lead to Khawa

 

The stakeholders are Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC), Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) and Kgalagadi District Council (KDC).

The event officially starts today in Khawa, a village approximately 167 km southwest of Tsabong.

The event, which is in its eighth year is one of the tourism product diversification initiatives aimed at amongst others stimulating domestic tourism market demand. The Khawa Dune Challenge & Cultural Festival continues to contribute to the development of local communities, providing support to those who pursue business opportunities, and boost sales to more than hundred percent increases in some businesses.

Khawa has been growing in leaps and bounds with additional activities introduced every year to make it more appealing. The total number of spectators who attended the event in 2018 was estimated at around 8, 000, from 7, 500 the previous year.

BTO carries out a socio – economic survey every year and the results continue to suggest positive socio-economic gains on the livelihoods of the community of Khawa and surrounding places, before and after the event.

The event will feature Motor & Quad bike challenge, fun Camel rides, 4x4 Dune challenge, helicopter rides (scenic viewing) cultural performances and exhibitions (sale of arts and crafts). Other activities will include soccer, dodge ball, netball, sand dune racing, sand boarding, motor bike stunts, contemporary festival, tug of war and Polka.

In addition, BTO has partnered with UNICEF, the Ambassador for “Eseng Mo Ngwaneng” campaign, the First Lady Neo Masisi and Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited (BIHL) to speak out against the abuse of the girl child and to address on self– preservation.

It has also made a contribution to cultural development of the host communities by providing them with a platform to showcase their cultural dance and song. Khawa has secured a prominent place on the map and has gained recognition as one of the tourism attractions in Botswana.
