The landscape has since changed with the reconfiguration of the opposition coalition. This has led to Kablay and his campaign team starting the campaign ahead of their competition. Kablay held his first campaign rally over the weekend in Letlhakeng where he told attendants that the BDP was an organised party with clear policies.
Through his party, they have done a lot for the constituency and therefore he would like to be voted into Parliament in the October general elections so that the party continued to rule. “You can all bear evidence that Letlhakeng was not like this before I took over as MP. We worked hard to improve Letlhakeng as you can see. It is not only Letlhakeng. There used to be no power in Boatlaname. We are currently connecting power in other villages,” he said.
“Just recently, I was in Sojwe where I informed residents that we would construct a brigade before the elections. In Shadishadi there was no water. At the moment we use P12 million to get water from the council borehole to Shadishadi to quench their thirst. We also built a borehole to water people in Mmamoagi.”
Kablay pleaded with the residents to vote for the BDP and ignore independent candidates. “We have in our constituency those who tell people that I am old and should not be voted for. An independent candidate has no manifesto. He does not have a government nor does he have a president. Where will he get votes and where will he get funds for developments?” he asked.
Still at the rally, Francistown South Parliamentary hopeful Modiri Lucas praised Kablay for the developments within the constituency. “Kablay assured me that developments are progressing well in this constituency. He told me about a Primary Hospital to be constructed in Letlhakeng. A bus rank will also be constructed soon. This goes to show that Kablay is a capable leader. We need you all to vote for Kabaly to keep the BDP in power,” he said.
On other matter, Lucas said President Mokgweetsi Masisi has encouraged the youth to partner and apply for funding from government to improve their livelihoods.
“It is time for all to reconcile and work together. I would like to see each ward produce at least a single group of youth forming cooperatives that would prosper through government funding,” he said.
He said in Francistown he grouped 100 youth and formed a company would that invest in different projects to empower themselves.
He also encouraged those with fields to change their land use and venture into different businesses including tourism and agriculture. In 2014, Kablay won the constituency with 5,265 votes followed by Gordon Mokgwathi of the UDC with 4,713 votes.
Kebofentse Phetolo of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) garnered 764 votes while Independent candidates, Anderson Mathibe and Mothusi Letlakela got 108 and 64 votes respectively. Onthatlhile Selatlho will represent the UDC in the elections slated for October.
