Makwengwe, against odds, also reached the Mascom Top 8 final, where his boys fell 2-0 to winners, Jwaneng Galaxy.

But despite his Houdini Act, particularly in the league, his heroics might not be enough to save his job, amid reports that the club management is considering options. The former Botswana Football Association (BFA) technical officer had been tasked with taking GU to a top eight finish, which he has all but achieved with one game to go. Makwengwe’s contract expires on May 31, and he is reportedly keen to stay on and try assemble a formidable outfit in the next season.

When he took over, GU was second from bottom with three points, just one place above Sankoyo Bush Bucks.

After 29 games, The Reds are seventh, with 40 points and are all but guaranteed a return to the Top 8 competition next season. Makwengwe refused to comment on his position, but GU director, Nicholas Zakhem said they will review the coach’s position at the end of the season. “We have not made a decision. We are waiting for the season to finish and we will take it from there,” Zakhem said.

It is not only GU that face decision time, but crosstown rivals, Township Rollers have the Rodolfo Zapata quandary. Zapata signed a short contract, which expires on May 31.  Despite riding turbulence along the way, Zapata has managed to calm the nerves with the league title while, he is still in with a shout in the Orange FA Cup.

The other top teams Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy also have technical matters to take care of. Mogomotsi Mpote’s future is not guaranteed at Orapa while Miguel Da Costa has made Galaxy to wait for his decision, but he is likely to leave.
