Bondo was surprisingly overlooked for the umpire/referee of the year award despite an outstanding year, with reports that BFA had failed to submit his name to the awards committee.

Township Rollers was also regarded as deserving of a nomination after a year in which they won the Mascom Top 8, the BTC Premiership league title and made history by becoming the first Botswana team to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League.BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said they had submitted Bondo’s name for consideration.

“Yes we did submit for referee, Joshua Bondo,” Mfolo said. He would not be drawn into saying if the referee’s omission was unfair, but said the BFA respects the judges’ decision.

“We can only say the adjudicators applied their minds as per the selection criteria and their decision is respected.” Bondo, Rollers, Isaac Makwala and to an extent, the cricket team, would feel hard done by, after failing to get at a nomination for this year’s award.

The national awards, formerly the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Awards will be held on June 8, 2019 at the Ba Isago Convention Centre.
