Khama was addressing a meeting in Serowe – BDP stronghold - where he is a paramount chief.  He said he has taken a decision to quit the party because of “harassment and bad leadership” from his predecessor President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

“This party ya Domkrag I don’t recognize it anymore. Today kene ke tsile gole bolela gore nna ke kgaogana le Domkrag,” (I have come here today to inform you that I am quitting the BDP) said Khama before he threw off his BDP membership card to a rousing applause of hundreds that had attended the meeting.

Khama laid out his plans; with a main aim being to de-campaign selected ruling party candidates and helping some opposition candidates in the upcoming elections.

Khama’s move is expected to add a spanner into Botswana politics ahead of the October polls.
