BAA Executive Committee Survives Coup

During the build-up to the meeting, affiliates had vowed that they have had enough of the executive committee.
The affiliates had initially written a letter to the committee requesting for a SGM. The letter was written by Mmadinare club and signed by other clubs in support of the idea. Kebaitse Legojane from Palapye club said the agenda of the meeting was already set out in the letter that was signed by the affiliates.
“We are here to discuss the agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which was to be held in February,” he said.
His comment was met by a reaction from BAA vice president, Kenneth Kikwe who said the SGM was already in their (executive committee) plans and it was not held because of the affiliates’ request. For his part, BAA president, Thari Mooketsi said at that point in time, it was not about the author of the letter, but he wanted to hear what other affiliates had to say. At that point, the affiliates kept quiet.
“You petitioned us and now we want to hear what you want to say about governance. You signed that letter and I guess you knew what you were getting yourselves into,” he said as deafening silence greeted his remarks. Mooketsi said his committee was not under pressure to organise an SGM. He said it is only right that if affiliates wanted to meet them, they have the right to do that.
“Of course we had planned to have this meeting but unfortunately they wrote to us before we could write to them. There is no pressure. It is a good thing that they initiated this meeting,” Mooketsi said.
He said clubs that were willing to table the motion were against growth. However, Legojane finally tabled the motion after lunch but unfortunately he did not get support from other affiliates. “We have been told that the Association was last audited in 2011. We are running an organisation that has a bad reputation out there. We have lost hope in the leadership and it is time that they vacated the office. When you can into office in 2017, you were beaming with confidence claiming that you are going to rectify everything in BAA,” he argued.
Ronald Masalila of BDF club told Sport Monitor that the SGM was to discuss AGM agenda which was the presentation of treasurer, secretary general and president’ reports. He said at the end of the reports was supposed to be elections.
“The executive committee claimed that they thought we wanted to discuss the agenda without going into the details. That is how they managed to turn around this meeting to suit their needs. Even Mmadinare club, those who wrote the letter, went along with the committee,” he said.
Masalila said that is how the meeting they had requested collapsed because the proposer failed to debate their motion. He said in that way other affiliates could have backed Mmadinare. He said the way forward is to wait for elections which have been set for June 29th.
