During their weekly meetings with the media held yesterday at the MYSC offices, Kgotlafela said  the dream to have a 100% local line up will not be possible.

She however clarified that local radio stations however have agreed to have local music dominating music in their airplay.

“We met with radio station managers. And we have been able to reach an understanding; they will be playing more local content and we are excited that with only two days into the month there has been massive improvement,” she said.

She continued: “The 100 percent local content will not mean that they will be playing local music and zero international content.

That is not possible, we all know that our music industry is still at an infancy stage.”

“They will predominantly play local content,” she stressed.

The minister of youth, sport and culture (MYSC) Thapelo Olopeng had, sometime in June, announced that the state broadcasters will only have an all-local line up from September 1 to 30.

He also posted on social media that he had talked with the station managers of the three private radio stations who also welcomed the idea.

Then, when Mmegi interviewed representatives from Yarona FM and Duma FM they mentioned that the idea was far fetched. They told this publication that there was not enough local content to sustain them for the whole month.

For their part, the local musicians had welcomed the initiative with open arms.

This was their chance to produce more music, which now has a higher chance of airplay.

This will also mean that there will be more royalties for the local musicians.
