Son on trial for mother's death

The state alleges that Thuso Motimedi shot his mother, Molly Motimedi, shortly after she knocked off from her business premises at Mmadinare in 2008.

Molly was a well-known businessperson who had interests in Mmadinare and Selebi-Phikwe. 

When appearing before Justice Bashi Moesi on Wednesday, Thuso pleaded with the court to allow him to change his pro deo (state appointed) attorney.

He said: “I plead with the court to change my current attorney Isaac Seleka and then engage Tshekiso Tshekiso at my own expenses because Tshekiso has been previously handling this matter. Tshekiso is more privy to the details of this matter than the current attorney”. 

Justice Moesi acceded to Thuso’s request and told him to make sure that he appears with his attorney of choice during the next mention on August 21 because he is facing a very serious offence which can attract the death penalty.

When this publication reported about the matter in June 2009, Thuso was charged together with his then 27-year-old friend who has been since exonerated of the offence. 

In 2009, Mmegi reported that two unknown gunmen shot the deceased in execution style at her home and then disappeared into thin air while she was returning home from her business.

Then, Botswana Police Service (BPS) public relations officer Christopher Mbulawa dismissed allegations that some police officers were directly implicated in Molly’s murder. 

Mbulawa said then: 'We are currently following some leads and until we are certain that the suspects are connected to the offence, then they will be taken before a court of law. We are not aware of any police officer who is implicated in this case”.
