Maforaga, who is also Rail Giants coach, said there is still room for the club administration to improve. “BSA administration needs to seriously introspect because they seem to regress. The maintenance of the National Diamond is poor,” he said.
Maforaga said there has been a high turnover of officials and there was no training of officials this season. He said the northern zone league needs an overhaul. He pointed out that the zone will always play second fiddle to their counterparts in the south. Maforaga stated that there has not been any all round improvement from last season.
On the field, however, the level of pitching has impressed Maforaga. He said pitchers have discovered their abilities, particularly the likes of Mothusi Bolele and the rise of Pami Mazulukwa of Panthers. However, Maforaga said offence (hitting) remains inconsistent.
BSA vice president, Batsetswe Gontlafetse said they had one of the most interesting competitions after a long time. He said with BDF IX (men) coming third after being champions for three out of five years, shows that teams are working hard to improve themselves. “Overall our teams have improved, especially in the men’s category, but a lot remains to be done in the women’s league. The BSA could have done a few things better,” he said. Regarding the readiness of the men and women teams for the world championships, Gontlafetse said the men are ready and would most definitely make an impact at the World Series.
“I have not been in touch with the technical team regarding the readiness of our number one pitcher, Kagiso Mogale, who has had a nagging injury for a while,” he said. However, Gontlafetse said the team equally has good pitchers who were with the team when it finished eighth in Canada in 2017.
“As for the women’s team, I honestly believe that there is still a lot of spade work to be done. After beating South Africa in the Africa qualifiers for Tokyo 2020, we have hope that a few things may have improved,” Gontlafetse said.
Wells International men’s team completed a treble, which they started with the Phikwe Extravaganza, Komatsu Easter tournament and the league championship. It was also business as usual for Police IX as they claimed the women’s title for the third time. The two teams each walked away P100, 000 richer.
