South East DC concerned about pregnancies in schools

The district commissioner for SDEC, Sebokwana Dikgope yesterday told a full council meeting that 58 out of 593 pregnant women who registered for Ante Natal Clinic (ANC) were teenagers and 22 out of 58 teenagers were still in school.
“This was a slight decrease from the previous quarter where 70 teenage pregnancy cases out of 699 pregnant women were recorded. Cumulatively, the district recorded 236 cases of pregnancy from a total of 2,492 pregnant women who registered for ANC during the year. Two out of 58 teenagers who tested for HIV were positive and were enrolled into the PMTCT programme. In total, nine teenagers who tested for HIV during the year were HIV positive,” Dikgope said.
Still on the issue of HIV testing, Dikgope said a total of 6,629 people tested for HIV and 129 were HIV positive.
He said there were 697 new cases of HIV positive during the 2018-2019 financial year, which was recorded from a total of 28,011 people who tested for HIV during the whole year.
He continued, “…659 out 665 (99.1%) eligible clients started ARV treatment during the year with 142 of the total clients having started in quarter four. All 277 HIV positive women were enrolled in the programme during the 2018-2019 financial year”.
“There was no baby who tested HIV positive during the fourth quarter. Only one baby tested HIV positive during the year in quarter three and this was due to poor adherence of the mother to ANC. The child was initiated into the treatment at the Baylor clinic”.
