Although the party is yet to invite candidates for the primaries, Herbert Mathumo and Jones Dubani have reportedly shared their wish to contest the seat to fellow members.

Both men have contested the BDP primaries before. Dubani contested the primaries ahead of the 2009 and 2014 general elections, losing to Samu on both occasions.

Mathumo tried his luck at the BDP primaries prior to the 2014 general elections.

Yesterday both Mathumo and Dubani did not want to be drawn into discussing their reported interest.

Said Mathumo: “I can only discuss my candidacy once the party has invited those who want to contest primaries to submit applications of interest”.

Dubani said that he is yet to decide whether he should consider challenging for the primaries or not. “I am still consulting with my family. A decision as to whether I want to challenge for the primaries will only be made once the party has asked candidates to come forward,” he said.

The Botswana Peoples Party (BPP), under the auspices of the opposition coalition, the Umbrella for Democratic Change, has indicated that it may field former area councillor and losing candidate from the 2014 general elections, Madumela Matebu. Matebu was councillor for two consecutive terms before he lost to Samu in 2014.

The BPP held a strategic meeting for the by-election over the weekend.

At a meeting held at Themashanga village the BPP also proposed that Richard Gudu be elected the campaign manager. But that decision, about the campaign manager, is yet to be finalised.
