The GCC called a special full council this week

The councillors said if the local authority could partner with property developers, it would be able to provide low cost housing for people and even council employees.

“Rental is very expensive in the city and most people cannot afford it.  Again some landlords hike prices every year without even considering the state of the house.  Some houses are not even in a good condition to be rented out,” the mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe said.

He added: “(Under this arrangement) the house owners will be able to take care of their houses and reduce house rentals.”

The council also resolved to hold mini-workshops/seminars to discuss critical education matters. This was after councillors raised concern about the challenges besieging the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD). The Ministry is struggling to pay living allowances and tuition fees for students, due to lack of funds.

The council also resolved to build a waste collection, transfer and processing station.

“I agree with you councillors on this resolution, but it should be known that council does not have money to build it.  Maybe the resolution will help the council to be given enough money next time for it to be built,” Thutlwe said.

Councillors also resolved to find new ways of funding infrastructural projects in partnership with the private sector since the government does not have enough money to fund all projects.

The special council withdrew a resolution to partner with Gantsi district as distribution and marketing partner for their abattoir.

Naledi North councillor, Oarabile Motlaleng led voices of concern who wanted to know how GCC would benefit in partnering with Gantsi.
