The councillors said the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is using institutions such the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DIS) to harass politicians.

“Of late, we have seen the use of BURS as a political weapon on those against the President Mokgweetsi Masisi administration.  As the Gaborone City Council, we call upon all public institutions to remain professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties.  It is unacceptable for public institutions such as the BURS to be used as hired guns in an attempt to silence opposition leaders. Such conduct stifles our democracy,” GCC mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe said.

However, the councillors said they caution these hired guns and their handlers that their actions are unpatriotic and a danger to democracy.  They called upon the international community to closely monitor the campaigns leading to the general election.

“It is our concern that these frivolous objections pose a threat to a free, fair and transparent election,” he said.
