More than 10 resignations were read out before the house this morning.  It is believed that more resignation letters are expected before the house disperses this afternoon.  Not all of the letters were read out as the house went into disorder due to other BDP members that were against the chairperson reading the resignation letters.

Councillor Baemedi Kudumane of Makwate/Shakwe/Taupye in the Mahalapye East led the councillors that resigned.  Kudumane said they are joining the newly formed Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF).  He said the BDP is no longer the party they believed in.

'Ga se party ya batho ka batho that we believed in.  We are expecting over 30 resignations in this session and many more in the next few days,' he said.

He added: 'We are moving to BPF.  We believe we will have enough numbers with other opposition parties to change this house.   That is our mission'. The CDC opposition whip Jordan Makhura welcomed the members to opposition quarters.

'This is an interesting development indeed and I welcome my comrades. It has been so long that we suffered as councillors and as a nation.'

'A lot of our motions that were designed to ease the lives of our citizens have suffered because of the BDP numbers in the house.  The Lord has finally shown them the light,' he said.
